Back by popular demand! Simon Bates Trio make a welcome return to West Side Jazz.
Simon Bates holds the esteemed position of Saxophone Professor for the Royal Marines and British Army, where his reputation is defined by his remarkable versatility and instrumental mastery. His exceptional playing can be heard in a plethora of mediums, including advertisements, film scores, television and radio shows, theme tunes, and popular recordings. Throughout his career, Simon has collaborated with a multitude of notable artists spanning various genres. From Jamie Cullum to Kylie Minogue, Elvis Costello to Dizzee Rascal, Lulu to Chaka Khan, Seal to Alfie Boe, John Dankworth to Cleo Laine, Steve Gadd to The London Concert Orchestra, and the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band—his musical partnerships have been diverse and extensive. Additionally, Simon has served as the musical director for esteemed vocalists such as Rick Astley, Alexander Armstrong, and Bette Midler, showcasing his leadership skills. Notably, he has also conducted performances with the BBC Singers and the Orchestra of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. In addition to leading his own Big Band, Simon actively performs with several smaller ensembles.

Blending jazz, soul, blues, folk and Americana influences, Jo Harrop has developed a style that is entirely her own. There is a warmth and honesty to her music that feels increasingly rare, whether she is interpreting a standard, delivering a heartfelt ballad or performing one of her own beautifully crafted songs. Every lyric feels lived in. Every phrase feels considered. Nothing is wasted.
Critics have frequently praised the emotional depth of her performances. All About Jazz highlighted her ability to convey a remarkable range of moods effortlessly and naturally, while audiences continue to be drawn to the unmistakable humanity that runs through everything she sings.

Wednesday 7th October | ‘100 YEARS OF MILES & COLTRANE’
Join us for a fabulous evening celebrating two of the greatest ever jazz musicians, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, in the centennial of their birth.
Presented by the Joe Hill Quintet, this band features some of the country's leading jazz musicians, who have worked together for nearly a decade on the European Jazz scene. Expect a variety of classic jazz standards such as So What, Straight No Chaser and Bye Bye Blackbird, as well some re-imagined versions of the pair's unforgettable tunes. From up-tempo swing and John Coltrane's unmatched jazz language, to Miles Davis' iconic muted trumpet sound playing over luscious ballads, this promises to be an evening to remember.
